How the Marine 3 Mile Run Calculator Works

Select genderThe Marine Corps table contains separate male and female run columns.
Enter your ageYour age maps to one of eight published scoring groups.
Enter your run time and calculateThe result is matched to the applicable 3-mile scoring column.
The official table is published in 10-second rows. For an entered time between two rows, this tool uses the next slower published 10-second row for a conservative table lookup. The original time is still shown in your result.

Published scoring boundaries

Marine Corps 3-Mile Run Standards

The Marine Corps table uses eight age groups. Each group has a 100-point maximum-performance time and a 40-point minimum-performance time. Male and female tables use different time standards.

Score mechanics

How the 3-Mile Run Score Is Calculated

The score depends on gender, age group, and elapsed time. Faster times receive more points. Once the selected age/gender group's maximum time is reached, the run receives 100 points. The published table then steps downward to a 40-point minimum.

This calculator stores the published maximum and minimum boundaries for every age/gender group and builds the same 10-second score rows used by the Marine Corps table. It then performs a lookup against the applicable column.

This page uses the standard 3-mile run table. MCO 6100.13A also contains separate altitude-compensation tables for courses at or above 4,500 feet mean sea level; those altitude scores are not calculated here.

How to Improve Your 3-Mile Run Time

Use your score as a pacing target rather than testing all-out every session. A useful training week normally combines easier aerobic work, controlled faster running, and enough recovery to keep the quality sessions productive.

Build aerobic volume

Use comfortable runs to improve endurance without turning every workout into a time trial.

Practice goal pace

Run controlled intervals near the pace required for your next scoring target.

Improve pacing

Avoid an excessively fast first mile that causes a large slowdown late in the run.

Retest consistently

Use the same route and similar conditions when comparing training results over time.

Additional questions

Marine 3 Mile Run Calculator FAQ

What if my run time falls between two 10-second table rows?

This calculator uses the next slower published 10-second row. For example, a time ending in :31 through :40 is scored from the :40 row. This conservative handling is stated in the result when it applies.

Does this calculator include altitude compensation?

No. It uses the standard 3-mile run scoring table. Marine Corps guidance publishes a separate altitude-compensation table for qualifying high-altitude courses.

Can my run score alone determine my overall PFT class?

No. This page calculates only the 3-mile run event. Overall PFT classification depends on the full PFT score and applicable Marine Corps requirements.

What happens if my run is slower than the minimum time?

The result is shown as below the published 40-point run minimum for that age and gender category rather than assigning an unsupported score below the table minimum.

Can I use this calculator for training targets?

Yes. You can compare practice times with the score table and see the next published score target, but official test results remain subject to Marine Corps administration.

Is this an official Marine Corps calculator?

No. It is an independent informational tool built from published Marine Corps scoring tables. Always use current Marine Corps guidance for official results.

Disclaimer: This calculator is provided for informational and training purposes only. It is not an official U.S. Marine Corps calculator. Always refer to current Marine Corps guidance and your unit for official testing requirements.
